You had always wanted a golden retriever puppy, and when I was thirteen mom decided to get you a puppy as a surprise for Christmas. You were shocked. And instantly, totally, in love. With Zoe.
But more about the animals another time (hands off this topic, Amy!).
Fast forward a few years, to Thanksgiving. We had it at our house, and Uncle Harvey was there, along with Janice and Rich and their two kids, Christopher and Richard. The kids were pretty young - maybe around 6 and 9, or 7 and 10.
Anyway, you gave Christopher and Richard (our cousins) $20 bucks each, as an early Christmas gift. You told them to keep the bills tucked away out of sight until they got home, because you didn't want their parents to make them give the money back.
Anyway, within about two minutes, Richard and Christopher were running around the living room, flashing their twenties for all to see, and of course their parents tried to make them give the money back, but you wouldn't take it.
The kids loved the dog, and a little while later, the older one, Richard, came to you with an offer.
- Can I buy Zoe with this $20?
- Well, Zoe is not for sale.
Then Richard conferred with Christopher, and they came back to you together.
- Would you take $40?
- Boys, Zoe is not for sale.
But you found this hilarious, I remember you telling me incredulously: They tried to buy Zoe, with the money I gave them! And you had to wipe tears from your eyes, you were laughing so hard.
You really had an incredible sense of humor. I always think about this story when I see Richard and Christopher.
Love, M
