Sneaks

As kids (and as adults), Mom was the one who took us shopping for clothes, school supplies, most things.  But sneakers were your purview.  We got new sneakers maybe once a year, and it was always a big deal to go over to 2nd Wind in Setauket with you.

I remember when high tops had just become a thing, you took me to get my first pair.  And Nike Airs, that little plastic bubble on the sole of the shoe the absolute epitome of cool.

You'd encourage us to run around the store as we tried out different pairs.  Really get a feel for them.  Take the decision seriously.  You'd show me with your thumb how much room should be between my big toe and the front of the shoe, a test I still use while trying on shoes.

Bright white shoelaces, crisp leather, the smell of new sneakers, they all remind me of you.
